Chapter 39

Lín's wound had already healed, but she still remained in the pitch-black darkness, unable to see anything.
This darkness lasted particularly long, just as Lín had previously noticed that daylight also lasted particularly long. The duration of both light and darkness had been extended simultaneously.
Why was this happening?
There were too many questions to ponder... Even the vast community of cells that made up Lín could not understand, just as it could not resist the previous water flow.
Lín needed to become larger and stronger to face these unsolved mysteries.
If it were the Lín of the past, she would have remained motionless in the water, waiting for the darkness to pass...
But this time was different. She wanted to take control in the darkness and not be passive, especially since she didn't know how long it would last. Therefore, she needed something that could emit light.
Lín not only had the flashing spheres but had also eaten a jellyfish before. She discovered that the jellyfish had some cells dedicated to emitting light. These cells had transparent membranes, and inside the membranes was a powdery substance that glowed. The flashing spheres, on the other hand, had developed a branching structure that glowed after consuming light-emitting bacteria. The two were quite different.
Regardless, Lín could make the flashing spheres consume the powdery substance to become brighter and then combine them to create a light-emitting structure sufficient for the carrier to see its surroundings.
The flashing spheres no longer exploded, so Lín felt it was better to call them "light spheres."
Creating this was quite easy. Lín split into more light spheres, combined them into a large spherical structure, and connected it with a tentacle, naming it "lantern" in her thoughts.
The "lantern" was located at the head of the carrier, with several blood vessels inside supplying it with nutrients. The light it emitted could only illuminate a small area in front of the carrier, though it couldn't compare to the light of daylight, it was enough for Lín to move.
Lín swam downstream, planning to meet up with the guardians on the beach.
Swimming in the darkness was a first for Lín. Under the light of the lantern, various oddly shaped debris, individual cells, and some unknown biological remains floated by. Lín's eyeball tentacles had been modified, with the largest eyeball in the center and six smaller ones around it to observe objects of different sizes. Lín wouldn't miss anything, even a virus passing by could be seen clearly.
Swimming deeper, Lín noticed that the debris in the water increased, and many cells appeared. Although they had no eyes, they seemed to sense the light Lín emitted and gathered around the "lantern."
Right, light attracts other organisms. Perhaps jellyfish use this to hunt.
Lín released the devourers to consume the cells gathered around the lantern and continued forward. Soon, she reached the sandy bottom of the sea.
When the lantern's light touched the sand, Lín saw many small organisms gathered on it. Unlike the light-seeking single cells, they immediately swam in all directions and disappeared into the darkness when illuminated.
Are these all multicellular organisms? Why are they afraid of light?
The light was dim, and Lín couldn't see their shapes clearly, but they seemed a bit like flatworms, though very small, similar to starfish.
Lín slowly swam over the sand and found that there were more nocturnal organisms than during the day, especially in the sandy area. Cells of various sizes floated everywhere, some afraid of light and some attracted to it. Lín had already created devourers with small lanterns on their heads and released them to hunt. She didn't want to waste this food.
As she ate and swam, Lín felt she was approaching the location of the guardians. Suddenly, she noticed a strange creature.
This organism looked like a giant black tentacle, about the same length as the carrier, with spiral ring structures on its surface. It was wriggling on the sandy bottom, seemingly feeding on cells.
Lín had never seen such a creature during the day, so she named it "dark worm."
Lín observed the creature, and the lantern's light was just enough to illuminate its entire body. She was assessing whether this "dark worm" was a threat or food.
The dark worm was slowly wriggling on the sandy bottom. Lín slowly swam closer, and when she reached above the dark worm, it suddenly twisted its body and rushed forward at high speed.
Lín immediately swung the carrier's tentacles to follow, chasing it in the dim light. She noticed that the dark worm seemed to be chasing another organism.
Lín lifted the lantern to shine light on a wider area and saw a small, round-bodied organism with segmented appendages on both sides fleeing quickly from the dark worm, but not fast enough.
The dark worm's head opened, and it bit into its target. Lín swam up to it and saw that the dark worm's head was a mouth filled with inward-curving sharp teeth. It was contracting the muscles around its mouth, using the teeth to crush the captured organism.
After observing for a while, Lín struck the dark worm's head with a hammer.
The dark worm, in pain, suddenly shook its head and spat out its prey. The small segmented organism, seemingly unharmed, immediately fled.
Lín didn't care; her target was the dark worm.
Although the dark worm had no eyes, it knew Lín was the cause, so it wriggled its body and charged directly at her.
Smack.
Another hammer strike hit the dark worm's head, slamming it into the sand. At the same time, Lín opened the carrier's skin and released a new "species."
Lín had learned from the starfish's injection teeth and created a new organism called "injector." This organism had a streamlined body, a long needle with holes at the head, and a water jet at the rear. It could accelerate instantly, pierce the needle into the opponent's body, and then contract its body to inject its contents.
The injectors' contents were virus-like cells, which Lín called "multipliers." These were new cells evolved from conical cells, with a needle-like hollow tube at the mouth, not for spraying but for piercing the opponent's cells and draining them.
As long as they obtained enough nutrients, they would immediately divide, much faster than regular cells. They were already full of nutrients before being injected, so even without absorbing more, they could multiply several times instantly.
The injectors could swim at high speed for a short time. They rushed to the dark worm's body, pierced its outer skin with their needles, and injected tens of thousands of multipliers.
The multipliers had no eyes, and Lín let them attack randomly, piercing any soft tissue they encountered, draining it, and then dividing. They continuously repeated this process, though not as fast as real viruses, they were still quite rapid.
Under the attack of numerous injectors, the dark worm began to twist in pain, rolling on the sand. It seemed that its internal organs were being destroyed.
At this moment, Lín made the carrier swim over and struck the dark worm's head hard.
Even with immune cells, it was useless because Lín's attack was both internal and external.
The dark worm soon stopped moving completely.
Lín then made the multipliers stop dividing and die automatically, and she would not waste any of the remains, recycling them all.
Next, it was time for a big meal.
Lín made the devourers enter the dark worm's mouth and began the process of converting it into nutrients, including studying its structure.
The dark worm had a structure that seemed to be an esophagus from head to tail, with eight rings of inward-curving sharp teeth near the head. The esophagus was filled with sand and the hard shells of other organisms.
The multipliers mainly attacked the tail, where there were large areas of cell damage, and the esophagus was also destroyed.
The dark worm's blood vessels were wrapped around the esophagus, and it had many small hearts along its body, similar to swellings on the blood vessels. Additionally, it had a larger nerve cluster near the head.
Besides that, there was a muscular structure on the outer layer of the body, used for rapid wriggling.
There was nothing worth learning from it; it was just food.
Lín immediately made the devourers start eating, as the dark worm could provide a large amount of nutrients.
Suddenly, an organism entered the range of Lín's lantern.
Was this the segmented organism that the dark worm had been chasing?
Lín saw the organism quickly running toward the carrier. Just as she was about to raise her hammer to flatten it, she suddenly noticed that a large organism was chasing it from behind.
