Chapter 88

Lín faced the vast desert, and with the loss of the worm, her guide, she had completely lost her sense of direction.
However, the worm had to be killed; otherwise, it would continuously secrete acid until it could melt Léviathan.
But Lín did not want to stay in this lake. She had never liked small places, and the water here could run out at any time, causing everything to disappear instantly.
The worm’s destination was definitely not here. Lín did not think such a large creature would live in a small lake that could disappear at any moment. It must have a more ambitious goal.
Lín did not know how the worm navigated, as it did not have a magnet in its head. If it had not been there before, it must have had a strong sense of perception. Lín found that the worm’s perception was not very strong, so it must have been there before.
But which direction should she go? She would have to rely on her instincts.
Lín formed a special tentacle on Léviathan’s back, mainly composed of a sensitive olfactory system, to detect the tiny water droplets in the air, which would help her determine the direction of the nearest water source.
Léviathan swayed its tentacles, moving around the worm as Lín sensed the moisture in the air.
...There seems to be more scent in this direction.
Léviathan followed the scent toward the northwest. Suddenly, Lín felt something under her feet. When she extended the eye tentacles to look, she found only the broken pieces of a scorpion that the worm had previously spit out.
...A scorpion? Come to think of it, scorpions are not desert creatures but wander through the desert in search of water and prey. These creatures must have some way of navigating...
Maybe I can find something?
Lín searched through the pile of scorpion fragments, but the desert scorpion was too damaged to find anything useful.
Hmm... I still have to rely on myself, don’t I?
Léviathan held the last piece of the scorpion’s shell with its tentacles. Just as Lín was about to throw it away, she noticed something stuck to the back of the fragment.
Lín placed the fragment on the sand and found that it was a cluster of over ten small white spheres, each about three centimeters in diameter. These had not been dissolved by the worm’s acid.
These were clearly the eggs of the desert scorpion. Although they looked fine on the outside, they were probably all dead.
Just as Lín thought this, one of the eggs cracked open, and a small scorpion identical to a large desert scorpion emerged.
It’s still alive? Lín was surprised. She watched as the other eggshells also cracked open, and a large group of small scorpions emerged.
After they were born, they did not run away but climbed up Léviathan’s legs and onto its body.
What are they doing? Do they mistake Léviathan for a large scorpion?
This is quite interesting. Perhaps large scorpions usually carry their young, and maybe these small scorpions can find water?
...It seems not. They just cling to Léviathan’s carapace, doing nothing. Lín still had to find the water herself.
She waved the tentacles again, sensing the air.
As a hot desert wind blew, Lín finally detected a scent. It was not water, but it had a plant-like smell.
I don’t know what kind of plant, but in that direction... there is clearly life.
Let’s go, then. The worm’s shell will remain as a base for this small lake, and Léviathan will head in the direction of the scent to find a truly suitable place to live!
Thinking this, Léviathan turned its body toward the target. A crack opened on each side of its body, and two pairs of giant wings extended from the cracks.
These were special dragonfly-like wings that Lín had made for Léviathan, with a wingspan of 8.6 meters, each wing as long as Léviathan’s body. They could be folded inside Léviathan’s body in a soft form and would harden when extended into the air, allowing Léviathan to fly!
Lín flapped these wings, and the sand and dust swirled around as a strong wind arose. The small scorpions on Léviathan’s back clung together, seemingly aware of what was about to happen.
However, nothing happened...
Lín’s wing-flapping technique was now very correct, just like a dragonfly, but she could not get off the ground.
Lín was not surprised by this result. Was it because Léviathan’s body was too heavy, or were the wings too small? But Lín thought they were already large enough. Larger wings would be cumbersome on land.
Lín now had a way to describe weight, using terms like ‘kilograms’ and ‘tons.’ Léviathan weighed about one ton, while a dragonfly might weigh only one kilogram. One thousand kilograms make one ton, which is much heavier than the largest flying creatures currently known.
What if I add a little more power? Thinking this, Lín opened the jet ports on Léviathan’s tail and forcefully ejected compressed gas. At the same time, Léviathan’s legs began to run quickly, and with the flapping of the wings, it shot forward like a bullet.
This feels great!
Léviathan raced across the desert. Although it was very fast, it could not leave the ground. No matter how hard Lín flapped the wings or how fast she ran, it could not take off.
Forget it, this is still much faster than before, and it feels very easy.
Lín continued to move through the desert in this ‘sprinting’ manner, which was much faster than the worms that burrowed in the sand and required much less energy than normal running.
The small scorpions on Léviathan’s back remained in place. Lín noticed that they not only did not fall off but began to crawl around on the carapace. Their feet seemed to have strong hooks to prevent them from falling.
Lín did not pay much attention to them and continued to increase her speed. According to her calculations, she would reach her destination before nightfall.
All the scenery receded as Lín ran. With her strong muscles and perfect nutrient supply, she felt no fatigue. As the sky gradually darkened, a large expanse of green appeared in the distance.
We made it!
Lín could not help but marvel at her current speed. If she had stayed inside the worm, it would have taken many more days and nights to get here.
As Léviathan approached, the green expanse grew larger and clearer, eventually forming a vast green line stretching for countless kilometers.
The green plants, like thick tentacles reaching for the sky, intertwined and extended upward, surpassing a hundred meters in height, even larger than the spires of the Lín spire. At their tops, numerous branches sprouted, covered in green leaves. These enormous plants formed a massive wall in front of Lín, filling her entire field of vision.
This area is called a ‘forest,’ Lín thought. Although she had heard the term before, she now understood its meaning better. These thick, tentacle-like plants that twisted and intertwined together are called ‘trees.’
‘Trees? It seems these are living organisms, not just rocks covered in moss like the Lín spire. The moss there is from the Aztec bugs, and this area is much larger, far exceeding the Lín spire in size.
Lín decided to call these trees ‘twisted trees’ because they curled together like tentacles. She did not know if two intertwined trees were one organism or two.
The life here seemed quite abundant. Lín could hear various strange sounds coming from the forest. Large numbers of dragonflies flew around the treetops, and occasionally, a large arthropod could be seen crawling up the thick, twisted trunks. The forest floor was covered in a layer of furry moss, with many small arthropods moving around in it.
Absorbing the fresh oxygen from the forest, Léviathan folded its wings and entered the forest of twisted trees. The scorching heat of the desert seemed to have completely disappeared, replaced by a cool sensation. Crossing the entire desert was truly worth it.
Looking up in the forest, the fading light of day filtered through the gaps in the leaves, twinkling like stars in the night sky. They swayed with the movement of the branches. Small reptiles darted through these patches of light, gnawing on the moss on the ground. Other small arthropods tried to join in, but they did not notice a dragonfly diving down from the sky. The dragonfly easily captured a slow-moving reptile, but as it flew up to the treetops with its prey, it accidentally hit a fine, white web. No matter how it struggled, it could not escape. A large arthropod with eight legs slowly approached it...
This place was full of vitality and abundant life, not the barren and narrow Lín spire of the Aztec bugs, but a new world.
Here, there will be a new beginning...
