"Based on the above, we will have Mr. Beryl Gardenant cooperate as a special instructor for the Reberio Knights. I expect all of you to train even harder."
The stern voice coming from next to me belongs to Alyssia Citrus. It is much heavier and more dignified than the one she used when chatting with me just a moment ago. This must be her formal voice. It’s difficult for me.
In front of me are dozens, perhaps even over a hundred, members of the Reberio Knights. All of them are clad in similar silver plate armor, exuding a formidable and oppressive presence. The knights vary in gender and age, but it seems there’s no one as old as me. It’s probably hard to be a knight in your forties when your body starts to show signs of wear and tear. I would have preferred to spend my days leisurely in a small countryside village.
"Then, sir, could you please say a few words?"
What, really? I haven’t thought of anything to say.
And if you were planning to have me speak, you should have told me beforehand.
Complaining here won’t change anything.
In response to Alyssia’s words, I try to avoid the concentrated gazes and begin my greeting.
"Um... I am Beryl Gardenant, as introduced just now. I’m not sure how much my skills will be of use to you all, but I will do my best to assist you. Please take care of me."
The knights’ gazes become even more focused after hearing my words.
Hmm, it seems to be about 80% skepticism and 20% expectation.
Among the skeptical gazes, some are even aggressive, going beyond mere suspicion.
Perhaps it was a bit much to suddenly be appointed as a special instructor. I’m a bit worried. It’s also strange that there’s a bit of expectation mixed in.
In some of those expectant gazes, I saw faces that seemed somewhat familiar. I wasn’t entirely sure who they were, and considering the atmosphere, I decided not to call out to them. I think they might be former students, but it would be embarrassing if I was wrong.
From the moment we arrived in the capital, Baltrain, and headed to the Reberio Knights’ headquarters, everything went smoothly until I was introduced to everyone.
There were four or five imposing knights guarding the front of the headquarters, but as the head of the knights, Alyssia naturally had a pass. Strangely, I also benefited from this pass. The head of the knights is really something.
Without much time to explore the capital, I was quickly brought to the headquarters. Even just seeing the streets, one could feel the prosperity. The wide streets, neatly paved with stones, were bustling with people and full of vitality.
There were a few souvenir shops at what seemed to be a carriage stop, and I thought I might ask Alyssia to show me around later.
Compared to my village, Bidden, this is a world apart. Comparing a small countryside village to the capital might be a bit presumptuous, but I can’t help it.
"Then, we will adjust the schedule for the training. All members, please return to your duties."
While I was lost in thought, it seems this gathering is about to disband. It was a bit unsettling to be under so many gazes, so I’m glad it’s ending early.
"Sir, let’s go."
"Ah, yeah."
Alyssia’s tone has softened.
It seems the formal voice is over. That voice had a dignified quality that suited her. She has really grown.
"Wait, Captain! Please wait a moment!"
Just as I was about to move from the central square of the headquarters.
I saw one of the knights hurriedly running towards us.
"Kurni, be quiet. A knight must always maintain composure."
The knight called Kurni replied energetically, "Yes, sir!" and then turned her gaze towards me.
She has short, brown hair that shines, giving the impression of an active and lively person. She is a bit younger than Alyssia. Her large, bright blue eyes convey a youthful and spirited look. She is shorter than Alyssia, clearly petite.
Overall, she gives the impression of a friendly dog.
And this impression is familiar to me.
"Kurni. It’s good to see you’re doing well."
"Yes, sir! It’s been a while, sir!"
She—Kurni Cruisiel—is also a graduate of our dojo.
She stayed for about two years, which was even shorter than Alyssia. Her energetic and affectionate nature left a lasting impression.
However, I couldn’t give her the farewell sword.
She had good potential, but two years wasn’t enough to teach her everything.
As a special instructor for the knights, I will have the opportunity to teach Kurni. I hope to see her progress and eventually give her the sword I couldn’t give her back then.
"You’ve become a fine knight. I’m proud of you."
"N-no, no! I still have a lot to learn, sir!"
Kurni was more obvious than Alyssia in her desire to join the knights. I remember her enthusiastically practicing, determined to join the Reberio Knights. It seems she has achieved her dream, which is great.
When I praised her sincerely, she flailed her hands around.
I can almost imagine her invisible tail wagging.
Hmm, a dog.
Kurni is so soothing.
"Kurni. We are not idle. Return to your duties."
Oh, Alyssia’s voice is starting to sound formal again.
But indeed, we are not idle. Well, my plan was to visit some souvenir shops. I want to quickly adjust my schedule and enjoy a mini-tour.
"Ah, sorry. ...Sir! Do you have time later today?"
"Hmm? Yeah, if I have some free time, I might take a walk around the town."
"Then, then! I can show you the town—"
"I will show you, Kurni. You should return to your duties. Hurry up."
Why are you so eager to eat!
Kurni is really scared!
She looks like a wet puppy!
