“He has passed away…”
The doctor said this in an emotionless voice.
He wore a pure white protective suit, his face was hidden. He seemed to be sad, but also looked like he had been finally freed, thinking, “It’s finally over.”
The reason why it looked like that was because… I had become a ghost.
I was stark naked and my body was transparent.
There’s nothing like this other than a ghost.
“Haaah… It was so painful.”
For some reason, I was relieved.
That’s right, I was in a lot of pain before I died.
Infected with a virus that’s spreading around the world, I went to the hospital with a headache and a cough and was told, “This is an unknown virus. Quarantine! Hospitalization! Test!”… Before I knew it, I was having trouble breathing, my head was hurting, I had a high fever, and the next thing I knew, I was dead in a heap.
By the way, this virus was raging around the world. I’m not sure if I was lucky or unlucky… I was the first to be infected and the first to die as well. At least, that’s what the doctor said.
“Anyway, I’m already dead… Aaaah!!! What’s going to happen to my PC and phone?! This is bad, this is bad. My shitty sketches and the ongoing novel I submitted for “Why Don’t You Become a Novelist?”…”
What to do… I can’t ask anyone for a favor since I’m a ghost now.
My coworkers… Not a chance. My parents…I can’t ask them too. I mean, the PC was password-protected, so no one should be able to open it. Well, I’m sure there were companies that could open it, but I would like them to not do it.
Seriously, I find that kind of thing really annoying. “There may be memories of the deceased in it….” might be a beautiful thing to say, but a computer is the ultimate private space, even more so than one’s own room.
“That said, I… Why am I a ghost? Is there really such a thing as the afterlife? Heaven or… No, no way!”
“That’s right, you’ve hit the nail on the head”
“Waaahhh!!”
All of a sudden, I was tapped on the shoulder.
I mean, like, seriously? A ghost like me getting tapped on the shoulder? Who could’ve possibly managed to do that?
Well, it was a burly, good-looking man with the wings of a bird sprouting from his back. His stomach was kinda nasty though. A bit too burly if you ask me.
“That’s rude. Well, forget it, I’ll just let it slide this time. Now then, let’s get to the point, I’m planning to reincarnate you in another world.”
“This is too sudden!!! Wait… So I was right!!! This is the all-too-familiar reincarnation to another world routine!”
That’s right, reincarnation to another world!
The one where one gets reincarnated in another world after they’re dead!
No way!!! Hahahaha! I did it!!!
“But… why? Does everyone get reincarnated in another world after they die?”
“No, not really. You died from a virus, right? In fact, this virus doesn’t exist on Earth. In La Red-Wolius, it’s a virus with cold-like symptoms that can be cured in a day… But to Earthlings, who have no resistance to it, it’s a terrible virus. I accidentally dropped the virus on your world… My apologies.”
“Wait, you’re the one who dropped the virus?! Aren’t you a god?!”
“A god isn’t all-powerful, you know. Anyway, the Earthlings have found antibodies in your body that will help them create a cure for the virus. Your name will go down in history.”
“Haahhh…”
“Ah, I’ve erased the data on your computer and phone. Also, I’ve been laying the groundwork for your novel to become a book.”
“Thank you very much!!!”
I really thanked this god for that.
Ah, it’s going to be published… I don’t know who will take over the work, but thank you.
I’ll give you the royalties in return.

“That’s why, as an apology, I’m going to reincarnate you in the world I’m managing. Of course, I’ll give you a cheat ability as well.”
“Whoa…”
“So, what kind of cheats do you want?”
Well, of course, becoming a hero. A cool sword. Shapeshifting ability. Instakill skill.
… Was what a normal person would ask. But not me.
“Give me a skill that will allow me to get a well-paying job there with about 3-4 hours of work time!”
“… That’s very specific.”
“Well, of course, that’s because if I become a hero or have any battle skills, I’d be sent into battle. It’s certainly entertaining to see, hear, and read about such things. But if I was to actually do it, it would definitely be hellish.”
It’s interesting because it’s a manga or novel.
But, a hero, me? I don’t want to become one.
“I see…Then, how about a tool maker? If you become a tool maker, you will be able to open and close your store whenever you want.”
“That’s great. A tool maker from another world, huh!”
“Also, you can choose to make it level-based.”
“Level-based? Oh, like the one where the product varieties increase as the level increases?”
“Correct. Well, it’s going to be a long life, and maybe a little bit of hardship is in order.”
“Hmm~ well, I want a moderate amount of stimulation, so that’s fine.”
“All right, I’ll use the level system. The ability is ‘tool maker’… Okay, all set.”
The god snapped his fingers.
And then, my body glowed.
“Whoa…”
“Right, the world I’m managing is as big and vast as the Earth. I’m sure you’ll have fun there, so good luck!”
“Yes, thank you, God!!! Thank you!!!!”
“Ahaha. It’s fine, you don’t have to thank me since you’re dead because of me in the first place… Huh? Ah, this is bad, I think I made a little mistake…. A-ahaha. Oh well, I’m sure we’ll figure it out.”
“What?”
My body was emitting light… and I felt warm and enveloped.
The last thing I saw was the god smiling at me for some reason, and then I lost consciousness.

“Ugh…”
When I opened my eyes, the color green greeted my sight.
Trees? Bushes? What’s with these trees… Their trunks were black.
“H, huh… I can’t move my neck.”
I couldn’t turn my head.
But when I tried to turn my head, my field of vision shifted.
Something’s wrong.
“… Eh, what’s this!”
There is no body.
I turned my attention downward and saw a tattered hut.
It looked like a mountain hut. A rickety hut with a rickety sliding door.
What’s going on here?
“Ah, the sign… Doesn’t say anything.”
I-I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
I’m a tool maker, aren’t I? A tool maker… Tool maker 1 ?
Wait, that god… didn’t he say, “Oh, this is bad, I think I made a mistake…”?
I had a bad feeling about this.
I, then, shouted that legendary line.
“Status open!!!!”
And a status screen appeared in front of me.

“…”
No way, no way, no way…. Surely, no way…
“Don’t tell me, I didn’t get the “Reincarnated in a tool shop”… But, the “reincarnated as a tool shop (building)” instead?”
My body had turned into a tattered shack.
“No wayyyyyyy!!!!”
My cries were sucked into a forest that I didn’t know where.

Footnotes
Toolmaker (道具屋) according to the examples I found on the internet, could mean the owner/a toolmaker, or the building/the shop.
