Chapter 1: Being Divorced
4 min read1,055 words
"Let's divorce."
After three years of marriage, the man, as usual, was sparing with his words. The three cold and clear words, devoid of any human warmth, hung in the air.
Nan Song stood behind Yu Jinwen, staring at his tall and straight back, like a pine tree. She watched his cold and ruthless face reflected in the floor-to-ceiling window, feeling her heart sink to the bottom of the abyss.
Her hands, hanging by her sides, silently clenched into fists, trembling.
The words she feared the most had finally come.
The man turned around, his face becoming clearer. His three-dimensional, perfectly chiseled handsome face, even after three years of daily encounters, still made her heart race.
"Can we not divorce?"
Nan Song forced out these words with difficulty, her eyes filled with a wavering light, yet still holding a glimmer of hope.
Yu Jinwen's brows furrowed, his cold eyes pausing on the woman's plain face, finally settling on her reddened eyes, his brows furrowing even more.
Even without makeup, Nan Song was still beautiful. She wasn't the type of woman with a strong, striking beauty, but her fair, flawless skin was soothing to look at.
She looked at him with her clear, panicked eyes, filled with pleading. A beauty mark under her right eye, her long, straight black hair hanging by her ears, soft and non-threatening.
But in the man's eyes, she was a soft and quiet woman.
As a wife, she had no faults, but he simply didn't love her.
Three years ago, he was in a car accident and became paralyzed from the waist down. The doctors said he might never walk again. It was then that he and his beloved woman were forced to separate. His mother pressured him to go on blind dates, wanting to find a doctor's daughter to take care of him for life. He chose a nurse from a group of admirers, Lu Nan Song, because she had no background and was quiet and reserved.
"You've been with me for three years and have taken care of me for three years. Ten million yuan is compensation for you."
When the man said these words, his eyes didn't waver, showing no trace of affection, "Or, do you want something else..."
"Why?"
Nan Song interrupted him for the first time, her red-rimmed eyes showing a hint of determination and... unwillingness, "Why do you have to bring up divorce now?"
Tomorrow was their third wedding anniversary. She had planned so much, even thinking that after three more years, and then twenty more years of three, it would be a lifetime.
"You know, the one I love is not you."
The man's cold tone was filled with endless indifference. He didn't even leave her a shred of hope, "Xuan Xuan is back, and I'm going to marry her."
Nan Song felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Her frail body couldn't bear the weight, and she swayed.
The three-year marriage she had guarded so carefully couldn't withstand a simple "I'm back."
"Sir..."
The butler hurried over to report, "Miss Zhuo just vomited again and is coughing up blood!"
The man's calm face showed a slight crack. He bypassed Nan Song and headed for the guest room, saying in a deep voice, "Prepare the car, we're going to the hospital."
A moment later, Yu Jinwen came out of the guest room, carrying a woman. She was slender and frail, covered with a thin embroidered blanket that Nan Song had made by hand.
Her face was pale, looking sickly, as if she could disappear from the world at any moment. She huddled in Yu Jinwen's arms, her voice weak, "Brother Jin, Miss Lu..."
Yu Jinwen paused at the turn of the stairs, turning to Nan Song, "The lawyer will discuss the specifics of the divorce with you. Please move out of the mansion within three days."
Then, he adjusted the woman in his arms and carried her down the stairs without looking back.
Nan Song stood at the top of the stairs, watching as Zhuo Xuan, lying in Yu Jinwen's arms, looked up at her with eyes full of victory.
Just an hour ago, this sick woman had smiled at her and said, "I've already walked in boldly, so just give him back to me."
When their figures finally disappeared, Nan Song slid down to the ground, her tears silently streaming down her eyelids. She hugged herself, feeling an intense cold.
Ten years.
From the moment he saved her from hell, she had quietly watched him for ten years and loved him for ten years. How many ten years does a person have?
But if he didn't love her, no matter how low she stooped, she couldn't move this man to love her.
"Ai Jin, this is the last time I cry for you."
Nan Song wiped away the cold tears, stood up, and the once delicate and fragile woman became incredibly cold, her eyes reflecting a determined light.
It was time to leave.
The divorce agreement was on the bedside table in the master bedroom, so conspicuous.
Nan Song flipped to the last page and saw the familiar signature. Her gaze flickered as she gently traced the name "Yu Jinwen," her nose tingling.
She sniffed, holding back the tears that threatened to spill, not allowing herself to linger. She picked up the pen and signed her name next to his—Lu Nan Song.
Since it started with this name, it would end with this name.
Nan Song placed a seal on the bedside table. From selecting the material to buying the jade and having it carved, it took her nearly a year. This was the carefully prepared three-year anniversary gift she had prepared for him.
In the past three years, she had given him many gifts, all carefully prepared, but they all ended up in the closet or directly thrown into the trash, just like her sincere heart.
As she walked out of the mansion, a black luxury car stopped by the roadside. Nan Song got in and said calmly, "I'm divorced."
The man in the driver's seat, wearing tinted glasses, smiled charmingly, "Congratulations on regaining your freedom."
He handed her a laptop, "It's time to be yourself again. We're all waiting for your return."
