Choosing a Blade (2)

On the second floor of Langhuan Pavilion, there are all kinds of the highest quality artifacts.

Zhuoyu Peak Master sighed, she used a trick to open the stair seal and walked up with Huai Bai and Pei Yu.

“On this level, there are two daos, No Regrets and Solitude.”

(T/N: a dao is a single-edged Chinese sword that is also called the “General of Weapons” in the group of four traditional Chinese weapons: the dao, the gun [stick or staff], qiang [spear], and the jian [double-edged sword])

The second floor is much more vacant than the first floor, and there are few artifacts scattered on the wall.

Zhuoyu Peak Master took them straight to the treasure daos.

The two daos gleamed with a faint light, and at a glance, they knew they were extraordinary products.

Zhuoyu Peak Master didn’t introduce it anymore, but looked at the two daos with her hand held down, and said nothing.

A dao is different from a jian.

The dao is the gentlemen of weapons, with a double-edged body, facing the enemy and the self at the same time.

Just like a gentleman’s benevolence, equality and humility, advance and retreat within the limits.

The dao has only one edge, and it is always pointed at the enemy. Once the dao is out, there is no way out.

Aloof and decisive, nine deaths without regrets.

Perhaps because of this, most sword cultivators are modest, while swordsmen are inevitably paranoid.

(T/N: the sword character used in the original Chinese for both sword cultivators and swordsmen are two different characters; the sword in sword cultivator is jian while the sword in swordsmen is dao and the difference between them is what weapon they choose; swordsmen are people of the rivers and lakes and don’t have the same kind of rules as a sword cultivator does)

The owner of these two daos is the same.

Huai Bai just glanced at it, and then directly rejected, “No, these two daos are too bloody and not suitable for my apprentice.”

Zhuoyu Peak Master stroked the old-fashioned pattern on Solitude, and whispered, “This is Xie Canglan’s former dao. Maybe you can let your apprentice try it.”

Huai Bai shook her head, “No, in my opinion, the two daos are no different.”

She paused, and said: “Let them stay here, Solitude and No Regrets, they are originally a pair.”

Zhuoyu Peak Master has not yet freed herself from remembering her deceased, and she heard Huaibo say shamelessly: “Let’s go to the third floor and see!”

“Don’t even think about it.” Zhuoyu Peak Master is anxious, “I have shown you the best stock, and you are still not satisfied. I said that the children can use the top grade, don’t be spoiled.”

Huai Bai disagrees, “Girls should be rich.”

Zhuoyu Peak Master stretched out her hands and stopped in front of the stairs like a hen guarding her cubs, “There is no dao on the third floor.”

“What are you doing trying to stop me saying there is no dao?” Huai Bai tried to break through, but was stopped to death. She sighed, “Good sister, it’s just this apprentice…”

Zhuoyu Peak Master laughed, “When you think I’m blind or when I’m stupid, one, two, three or four of your apprentices are still waiting downstairs. If I break this precept for you, what if someone else asks me to give their apprentice a magic weapon in the future?”

Pei Yu pulled Huai Bai’s sleeve and whispered softly, “Master, I don’t want it.”

Huai Bai turned and touched her head, “Be good, don’t worry.” Then she smiled and asked, “Do you want to know where In the Clouds is?”

Hearing about In the Clouds, Zhuoyu Peak Master’s eyes lit up, “Where!”

Huai Bai smiled and said, “Let us go up and I’ll tell you.”

Zhuoyu Peak Cultivator is in a dilemma.

As a tool cultivator, she really couldn’t resist the temptation of the whereabouts of the mysterious weapon. She was tangled for a while, sighed and put down her hands, and said helplessly: “I’m convinced by you, but the things on this floor are similar to your In the Clouds. They are all rare mysterious weapons, so you can only look.”

(T/N: mysterious is a cultivation level above nascent soul)

Huai Bai smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll take a look and never touch it.”

“Where is In the Clouds?”

Huai Bai waited specifically for Zhuoyu Peak Master to open the seal before she whispered something in her ear.

Zhuoyu Peak Master had big eyes, “Are you crazy? You threw In the Clouds there?”

Huai Bai’s smile was a bit meaningful, “Senior Sister, wasn’t I crazy at that time?”

Zhuoyu Peak Master remembered the past, but she still pitied her and patted her on the shoulder, “Forget it, I will cast a jian for you again.”

Huai Bai did not directly refuse, but just asked: “Shall we go up?”

Zhuoyu Peak Master shook her head and took out two jade tokens, “You take this up, I’ll be waiting below.”

The third layer is equipped with multiple formations, and only those with tokens can enter.

Pei Yu stepped on the floor inlaid with gold and jade, and saw a red shadow thorn coming. Huai Bai stopped in front of her, holding the red shadow in her hand——

It was a dao.

The blade is like white jade, and the red thread on it is like silk, as if blood is flowing slowly.

Slender and beautiful, like a beauty in a pavilion.

This is her dao back then!

Huai Bai looked at it, handed the knife over, and said with a smile: “Apprentice, try it.”

The Splendid Dao is long and narrow, and when it is held by Pei Yu, its shape becomes much smaller, turning into a small dao like a child’s toy.

It’s very handy.

Pei Yu tried to wave it, and the sound of breaking wind whizzed into her ears.

Obviously it was her dao back then, so why would there be a coercion on it that is difficult to be matched with the best magical artifacts?

Huai Bai said with a smile, “Cub, it seems that this dao is yours by nature.”

Pei Yu caressed the Splendid Dao, feeling the dao buzzing in her hand——like it was cheering.

Was it made by the gorefiend?

Since she appeared three hundred years ago, maybe this was something she left to herself specially, like the reincarnation stone.

This is not groundless speculation.

Pei Yu remembered when the blood demon had just appeared, it was when she was suffering at the bottom of the Ten Thousand Demons Cave.

Ten Thousand Demons Cave is a place that is bloody, gloomy, and never sees the light

Pei Yu lay on the ground, like a rag doll, with her hands and feet folded into strange shapes.

She was covered with corpses.

These humble little things in the Ten Thousand Demons Cave smelled the smell of death early, and slowly bit her body.

The corpse insects are like ants on the ground. Although they are weak and small, they are huge and densely packed. They soon cover Pei Yu, and only a vague human figure can be seen on the ground.

She half-opened her eyes, and what was swirling in her mind was the moment when Gushan was destroyed.

There are thousands of thunders, and the mountains are burning with fire. Her master and her Gushan have been burned all day and night and turned into ashes.

The consciousness gradually became blurred, and the pain in her body was not very obvious.

A drop of bloody tears flicked across the corner of her eyes, and her eyes slowly closed.

The sunrise on Shouxian Peak is so beautiful.

A woman walked in the dark world.

Dressed in a blood coat, with long hair flickering, her face was gorgeous and cold.

Pei Yu opened her lips and made no sound.

The corpse insects, the ten thousand demons, and everything seemed to disappear, leaving only her and this person in the world.

The woman bent down, squeezed her chin with her hand, forced her to raise her head, “Tsk, it’s so pathetic.”

“Who are you?”

The woman raised her eyes, and her smile made people feel terrified, “I am the devil in your heart, Pei Yu.”

She stretched out her hand, brushed her cold fingertips across Pei Yu’s face, and went all the way down, and finally pointed at her chest, leaning her head against Pei Yu’s ear, and whispered: “Hidden within you, all the time.”

She seemed to perceive the surprise in Pei Yu’s heart, and she laughed again, “Do you really think there can be a pure white lotus blooming in the black mud? Pei Yu, Pei Yu, the world says you are a fairy outside the clouds, but only I understand what is hidden in your heart.”

Pei Yu met those mocking eyes and felt as if she was standing naked in front of her, with nothing to hide.

Can a white lotus bloom in the black mud that is not stained by the mud?

Can’t.

The woman wrapped her waist, pressed her forehead against her forehead, and said softly: “Pei Yu, in this world, no one loves you except me. No one loves you more than me.” The low voice was like a demon’s bewitching, and let Pei Yu gradually fall in, “Only I understand you. Your depression, tolerance, and desire, only I will make you happy.”

“Happiness?” Pei Yu’s eyes gradually lost brilliance.

What is happiness?

She wants to be with her master forever. She wants to have a magical weapon that will move the world. She wants to be loved and cherished by others, with two or three close friends, admired by the seniors, and admired by the junior brothers and sisters, just like other ordinary disciples.

It’s not like it is now, where she always has to eat and endure more suffering to get things within reach of ordinary people.

This life is really tiring…

If she can just let it go.

The woman said with a low smile: “Pei Yu, it was because of me that you could meet your favorite master, so believe me. Didn’t you say it then? All the dark and shameful things in this world, I will bear it for you, and you, it’s fine so long as you have a light breeze and clear moon.”

(T/N: light breeze and clear moon is an idiom that means a period of peace and prosperity; she’s basically saying she only needs to live well)

Pei Yu’s eyes blinked.

The woman slowly merged with her body, and after a while, she opened her eyes.

In front of her was still a dim cave of ten thousand demons, and the pain of the corpse insect biting the flesh and blood became clear again.

Pei Yu opened her mouth, and a few corpse insects crawled into her mouth curiously, and were snapped by the only intact teeth from all over her body.

She chewed on the disgusting corpses, and a strange smile appeared on her face.

“Will you really make me happy?”

She smiled and made a deeper voice, “Yes, my Pei Yu.”

“Will you still occupy my body then?”

Pei Yu cast her eyes on a passing demon and licked her scarlet lips, “I was born to protect you. If one day, you no longer need my protection, I will leave.”

“Leave? Where to go?”

“Perhaps a deep sleep, or a long sleep. But as long as you call, whether it is the blue sky or Yellow Spring, and I will return to you.”

(T/N: blue sky or Yellow Spring means no matter where, whether it be heaven or hell)

“Cub?” Huai Bai shook her hand in front of the child several times, but the child still looked dumbfounded.

This dao won’t make people stupid, right? Pei Yu woke up just as she was about to grab the dao, “Master?”

“I was scared to death,” Huai Bai patted her chest, “I thought you went stupid. Cub, what was your daze just now?”

Pei Yu held the knife, “It’s nothing.”

Huai Bai rested her chin and thought, “Is there some ancient immortal heritage? Or is it the system’s secret treasure that awakened? Don’t worry, needless to say, I will keep a secret for you!”

Pei Yu felt a little strange, “Master, what are you talking about?”

Huai Bai smiled and said, “I know, it’s inconvenient, just like the peerless master in martial arts novels passing you their secrets, and then not letting you tell other people, I understand, I understand! Is there an old man with a white beard who suddenly appeared in your sea of consciousness, saying that he was an immortal who failed to cross the tribulation and could provide you with gold fingers?”

(T/N: this whole thing Huai Bai said is stuff that commonly happens in modern novels of this type; gold fingers means cheats)

“……What?”

Huai Bai patted her on the back, “Needless to say, I understand, I understand.”

There are other magic weapons and treasures on the third floor, but the two of them are not interested. They didn’t even look at them. After they got the dao, they walked down.

Zhuoyu Peak Master kept guarding below, seeing the dao in Pei Yu’s hand, her eyes were red, “Didn’t you say that you just look at it and don’t touch?”

Huai Bai was very helpless, “Listen to me, it was the dao that moved to our hand first!”

Zhen’s thoughts:

We got some backstory on the other Pei Yu, or well, Ming Luan. The devil in her heart, which, I’ll just remind people that Pei Yu has mixed blood. She’s part human part demon, so having a literal demon be in her heart isn’t too out of left field. Her dao is also not so low grade anymore.

Speaking of daos, I will be going back and editing all of the mentions of swords when I have time because I didn’t realize that they just classify those weapons with the pinyin of the Chinese name in English. You can search up dao blade on Google and it’ll show you what those look like. It might take a while for all of the edits to happen since we’re 45 chapters deep, but I’ll still try and get it out soon.

EDIT: So… my sister is actually graduating Saturday so the updates for that day might be a bit delayed… I’ll try and get them out the same day but yeah…
