Ritsu, who advanced through the forest relying on the reaction of “Ki”, noticed that there were signs of multiple humans around that “Ki”.
“Am I too late?”
Ritsu imagined a situation where humans and spirit beasts fought, and picked up his speed.
“Take the horses! The insides of the carriage come after!”
As Ritsu arrived to where he sensed the “Ki”, he saw people dressed as bandits attacking a carriage.
“As if!”
Most of the soldiers guarding the carriage had fallen, leaving only one standing.
“[Sakura Ichi-monji]”
He stops the bandits moments before they could strike the final blow to the dying soldier.
“Who the hell are you.”
The thieves who were intruded upon, point their swords from where the slashing attack came.
“…..[Namizakura]”
A large amount of cherry blossom petals push the bandits away from the carriage.
“Uwaa!!? What are these, insects? Sakura petals?”
“Don’t falter!!”
“Have you restrained the horses!?”
“Yeah!!”
“Scatter!”
The bandits who seemed uncharacteristically organized, fled the area as soon as a wild card like Ritsu appeared, as if the horses were their main purpose.
“Are you okay!?”
Ritsu rushes over to the last surviving soldier.
“No… As you can see, I don’t have much longer.”
The soldier mutters while holding his wounded stomach.
“Thanks for saving me…… I have a last request. Deliver this, to the owner of “Kazuno’s Diner”, Kazuno Taishiro, in the capital of Shimozawa district. Also, there should be, a survivor, in the carriage. Save her as well.”
The soldier takes out paper from his pocket and hands it over.
“Please. I’ll give you everything I have, as reward.”
“I understand. I promise to deliver it. I’ll also save the girl in the carriage.”
Ritsu receives the stack of papers, and replies.
“Don’t hand, the girl over, to the district. I want Taishiro, to look after her.”
“You got it.”
“Nice eyes. Please. Your, name…?”
The soldier looks into Ritsu’s eyes and smiles, after which he collapses onto the ground sprawled.
“Yozakura school Ousei, Yozakura Ritsu. I’d like to know your name as well.”
“Haha. Seriously. I didn’t expect to meet a living legend at the very end. I’m Sonezaki Sou, a comrade of the Taishiro group.”
“I’m sorry for not making it in time. If I had been faster…”
Ritsu mutters while biting his lip.
“I’m not sure if you’re an Ousei, but if you are, then guess Ouseis are also humans. Please help Taishiro as well, if you can.”
“Yeah, I’ll do what I can.”
“Yeah. That’s, reassuring. Taishiro, I leave the rest…….”
“…….I’ll let him know.”
Ritsu closes Sou’s eyes, then hurries to the carriage.
“The presence of “Ki” is leaking from inside this carriage…..”
The closer he went to it, the faster Ritsu’s heart beat. He stepped inside the carriage.
Inside the carriage, lay an unconscious girl with silvery-white hair, who was tied up with a rope.
“Oi! Are you alright!?”
Ritsu unties the girl, and hesitantly approaches her.
The girl was the source of the “Ki” which had drawn Ritsu here. He then freezes, realizing that this was too much Ki for a single girl to have.
“What does this mean? The sanctuary transfer was 54 years ago.”
Ritsu used appraisal, which he had avoided using until now.
——–
Tachimori Rion
Race: Human
…*chink*
“!!!?”
While trying to see her status, Ritsu gets deflected by something.
“Impossible…”
(Appraisal obstruction doesn’t work unless someone’s on a higher, or at least same level….. A human that’s able to deflect a sage’s appraisal should be impossible. Though I was able to see until part way, so she’s either the same or slightly lower level than me.)
Unable to hide his surprise, Ritsu stays still for a moment. According to what he learnt from the spirit tree, since sages have higher Existence Value than humans, they can deflect any attempts at appraisal by the latter. On the other hand, since spirit trees have higher EV than even sages, it could easily deflect Ritsu’s appraisal.
That was exactly what had happened, while Ritsu was training with it.
“What could this mean…”
Thinking about it only deepened the mystery, so Ritsu took the girl in his arms, laid her down on a cloth he took out, then went outside to collect the soldiers’ possessions.
“That should do it.”
Finishing the burial, Ritsu turned his back on the rising uneasiness within him, and carried the girl as he advanced toward the town.
