An entire week passed since that news report, but there were no new developments. The police still continued its investigation, but there was now a heavy atmosphere over the entire city.
“Still nothing yet, huh.”
Due to the incidents not dropping pace in the last three days, schools were temporarily closed and students were warned not to step out as much as possible.
I muttered to myself, as I stared out at the empty road in front of my house from the window. Normally, this was the time when it would be crowded with students heading back from school.
It must be tough being forced to stay inside, without being given a proper reason. There were even a few people in our class chat who were sneaking out of their houses to hang out.
While looking at the somewhat disproportionately clear sky, I stretched on top of my futon and began meditating.
At midnight, while everyone else slept, I was preparing to head out for a run.
“Okay, Let’s go.”
I wasn’t sure about carrying out my daily routine during daytime, so I decided to run in the middle of the night.
Till now, I hadn’t ran into any sort of trouble. Only like before, I occasionally felt a large mass of ‘Ki’ in the distance.
“Fuu.”
Perhaps it was the result of my Kikou training, but I now had a lot more strength, and I wouldn’t get tired no matter how long or intensely I ran.
Grrrrrrrrrr…..
“Hm, a dog?”
What was that?
As I looked closely, I saw a large black dog standing behind the distant treeline. Its pupils were shining, and I could see multiple similar orbs shining in the dark of the night.
“That’s weird.”
I should have picked up their presence at this distance.
“I can’t feel their presence at all.”
It happened as I muttered doubtingly,
“””WOO—N!”””
The moment when the largest dog howled,
“—,!!?”
I swung my arms up at once, and intuitively took a defensive stance.
“Gu–!”
Two black dogs bit into my arms one-by-one.
(I didn’t even notice them approaching at all, how’d they move at such ridiculous speeds?)
Strengthening the Ki around my body while thinking of kicking one away with my right leg, one of the dogs vanished from sight.
(Huh?)
The second dog then took its distance, and glared at me.
Expecting their next attack, I strengthened myself to the max using Kikou.
Reacting to my Ki, right as the dog poised itself in order to attack,
“GAAA-“
The dog that had disappeared before, crawled out of a telephone pole’s shadow along with some black mist, and pounced at me.
(So that’s what’s up!)
“ORA!”
Having reacted properly this time, I infused Kikou into the towel wrapped around my neck, side-stepped its attack, and swung the towel down at its vital point.
“Gyan–!”
Raising a whimper, it stopped moving soon after I hit it.
“Fu…!”
Keeping in line with my momentum, I sprinted towards the other dog that was about to dive into the shadows, and swung my arm.
“Fuu, they were less like dogs, and more like wolves.”
For the time being, as the danger passed and my nerves were still at their end, I finally heard screams and warning alarms buzzing from all over the city, which was swathed in darkness.
