Zhou Wen didn’t think too much about it. What others thought had nothing to do with him. He just wanted to get a good score in the college entrance exam’s practical test, then enter a prestigious university, and after that, play games well, muddle through to graduation, and find a job that could involve the dimensional field.
However, there was one thing that made Zhou Wen a bit concerned. He had never carefully thought about being defeated by An Jing before, but after Fang Ruoxi reminded him, he also felt that something was not quite right.
An Jing was about the same age as him, or even younger, but she was very likely already a Legendary powerhouse. Although there was only a one-level difference, the gap between a Mortal and a Legendary was like the difference between heaven and earth. It was almost impossible for a Mortal to defeat a Legendary powerhouse.
The most obvious sign was that only Legendary powerhouses had the chance to obtain a Companion Beast, while it was very difficult for Mortals to obtain one. Even if they got a Companion Egg, they wouldn’t have enough Essence Qi to hatch it.
There were also many invisible gaps, such as when humans advanced to the Legendary level, they would awaken their Legendary Destiny, which greatly enhanced their physical attributes, further widening the gap between Mortals and Legendary powerhouses.
Unless there was a reason that forced them to act, ordinary Legendary powerhouses would disdain to act against Mortals. An Jing, however, had actively challenged him, a Mortal student, and soon after the challenge, she transferred to another school, which seemed like she had come specifically to beat him up.
"I’ve never left Guide Prefecture, so how could I have offended such a person? Could it be Dad..." Zhou Wen thought about it, and it seemed there was only this one possibility.
Zhou Wen’s mother died in childbirth, and he grew up in a single-parent family. His father, however, was very unreliable.
Zhou Wen’s father was named Zhou Lingfeng, and just like his name, he was a man as unpredictable as the wind. From the age of five, Zhou Wen had learned to be alone, cook simple meals, do laundry, manage household chores, and go shopping at the supermarket.
His unreliable father claimed that this was to cultivate his survival skills from a young age, which would be his capital for finding a wife in the future.
Although his unreliable father was very lazy, the one thing that made Zhou Wen feel somewhat relieved was that Zhou Lingfeng never failed to provide him with living expenses.
Zhou Lingfeng worked as a translator, proficient in multiple languages. When Zhou Wen was young, he often took documents home to translate. However, with the advancement of technology, translation software became more powerful, and Zhou Lingfeng’s work gradually decreased.
Later, as Zhou Wen grew older and became more independent, Zhou Lingfeng started taking on on-site translation jobs, often traveling. Sometimes he would be gone for a week, and sometimes for two or three months.
This time was even more extreme; Zhou Wen hadn’t seen him for half a year. If it weren’t for the fact that he transferred living expenses to Zhou Wen’s account every month, Zhou Wen would have been worried that he had died somewhere.
Since Zhou Lingfeng sometimes went to remote areas with poor communication, it was common for him to be unreachable by phone, and Zhou Wen had already gotten used to it.
Even if he wasn’t used to it, there was nothing he could do. Apart from waiting for Zhou Lingfeng to return, he couldn’t do anything.
There were only the two of them at home, and Zhou Wen had no chance of offending someone like An Jing, so he was very suspicious that it might be his father, Zhou Lingfeng, who had offended someone, and they couldn’t find Zhou Lingfeng, so they took it out on him.
Zhou Wen had no confidence in his father’s character. He was a glutton and a playboy, good at eating, drinking, and playing, and often frequented bars. In the past, he had been chased by men after flirting with their girlfriends.
If it weren’t for Zhou Wen’s strong survival skills, he doubted that Zhou Lingfeng could have raised him to adulthood.
Just as he was thinking, he suddenly heard his phone ring, startling him. He pulled out his ordinary phone and saw that it was his father, Zhou Lingfeng, calling.
"Speak of the devil." Zhou Wen quickly answered the call. Just as he was about to say something, he heard Zhou Lingfeng’s voice from the phone: "Son, I’m getting married. Do you want to come to my wedding?"
Fortunately, Zhou Wen wasn’t drinking, or he would have sprayed water all over.
"You’re getting married? Who are you marrying?" Zhou Wen didn’t mind Zhou Lingfeng remarrying. After all, Zhou Lingfeng had been single for many years, and finding a partner was normal. Moreover, after getting married, he might not be as unreliable as he was now, which could be a good thing.
"I’ll send you a photo of my sweetheart." Zhou Lingfeng said, and without waiting for Zhou Wen to respond, he hung up and sent a photo.
Zhou Wen looked at the photo on his phone, which showed Zhou Lingfeng with a woman who looked to be in her early thirties. She was elegant and beautiful, with a very good temperament. Unlike the so-called beauties on the internet, this woman had an intellectual beauty and a unique charm.
"How is it? The new mom I found for you is pretty good, right? Her name is Ouyang Lan." Zhou Lingfeng called back, sounding very proud.
"Not bad, but she’s not my mom." Zhou Wen said.
Although he didn’t mind Zhou Lingfeng remarrying, he was already grown up and didn’t plan to recognize another mother. Besides, Zhou Lingfeng wasn’t often at home, and he was already used to living alone. The woman might not welcome him as a burden, so it was better for everyone to live their own lives.
"My wife, of course, is your mom. That’s an undeniable fact. By the way, son, my wedding is in a few days. You must come, okay?" Zhou Lingfeng said nonchalantly, as if nothing bothered him.
"Where? When?" Zhou Wen asked.
"Luoyang, about a week from now." Zhou Lingfeng said.
"The college entrance exam is in a few days, and the time you mentioned is exactly during the practical test. I plan to take the practical test, so there’s a conflict. I can’t go even if I want to." Zhou Wen said helplessly.
He was willing to attend the wedding, but this time he really couldn’t make it.
"Time flies, you’re already taking the college entrance exam." Zhou Lingfeng clearly didn’t remember this, and he sighed a few times after hearing it.
Zhou Wen didn’t have high expectations for Zhou Lingfeng, but he still felt a bit disappointed, fearing that Zhou Lingfeng had even forgotten that he was graduating from high school this year.
"Dad, do you know there’s an iron biscuit box in the closet at home?" Zhou Wen suddenly asked.
"Biscuit box? What biscuit box?" Zhou Lingfeng asked in confusion.
"It’s a square iron biscuit box, about thirty centimeters on each side, with a cartoon bear pattern on it..." Zhou Wen described the biscuit box in detail.
"That’s the bear biscuit box. I used to eat them a lot when I was young, but that brand of biscuits isn’t available anymore. The biscuit box at home might be from the past. Why are you asking about this?" Zhou Lingfeng said.
"There’s a phone inside that bear biscuit box. Did you put it there?" Zhou Wen’s heart beat slightly faster because that phone was the mysterious phone he had obtained.
