Chapter 95

As the town of Balca, the castle town began to take shape.
After the construction of the buildings inside the outer walls reached a certain stage, I decided to move on to another task.
It was the renovation of the walls themselves.
When I built the castle in Kawanaka, I also renovated the walls that were created using the "Wall Construction" spell.
This is because, while the walls created by my "Wall Construction" spell can withstand the charge of a wild boar, they are not suitable for defending against the attacks of a human army.
A mere thick wall would be easily breached in a siege.
Therefore, it was necessary to make improvements to the walls.
Ideally, I wanted to change the entire outer wall to hardened brick.
However, the distance of the walls is far too long.
Currently, the walls that can be created using the "Wall Construction" spell are made of regular bricks, and to make them out of hardened bricks, I would have to do it without relying on the spell.
This would be far too inefficient.
So, for now, I decided to limit the work to renovating the existing walls.
At the castle in Kawanaka, I built towers higher than the walls at the four corners of the wall that encircled the castle in an L-shape.
This was not only to quickly spot enemies from a distance but also to create entrances and exits on top of the walls.
I decided to build these towers in the town of Balca as well.
However, the castle in Kawanaka was originally a repurposed campsite designed to accommodate 100 people, so it wasn't that large.
Thanks to the moat, I think it has decent defensive capabilities, but it's more like a fort or an outpost that can accommodate a few hundred soldiers.
For a place of that size, building towers at the four corners was sufficient.
However, the town of Balca covers a much larger area than the castle in Kawanaka.
Building towers only at the four corners wouldn't be enough.
So, I decided to increase the number of towers along the outer walls.
I would place towers of the same structure at regular intervals, just as I did when building the castle town.
Towers would be added to the walls at intervals of about 200 meters.
I would do this work alone.
During this time, I asked the others who were free to renovate the top of the walls.
The top of the walls created using "Wall Construction" is flat, so I asked the people of the Balca family to use the hardened bricks they made to build walls to hide behind for protection from arrows and magic.
Since I had already done this at the castle in Kawanaka, I could leave it to Gran, Baito, and Burgas without having to supervise them.
By the way, if we were to engage in a defensive battle, I think the main method of using weapons would be dropping bricks from the top of the walls.
Of course, we could use attack spells like "Scatter Shot" and "Ice Spear," but human magic power is limited.
On the other hand, bricks can be stockpiled in advance.
I plan to store the bricks on top of the walls or in rooms in the towers.
Of course, there will be people who use bows, but for now, we will rely on the quantity of bricks.
Eventually, we need to increase the number of bows and other weapons to conduct a proper defensive battle.
When I thought of the method of dropping bricks from the walls to damage the invading army, Gran had already designed and renovated the walls at the castle in Kawanaka to suit this purpose.
The walls were designed to make it easy to drop bricks and arrows from the top of the walls but difficult for attacks from below to hit.
They protrude slightly from the walls, with gaps to drop things through, like a bay window.
While I was building the towers, I asked the others to proceed with the renovation of the top of the walls.
I continued to drink magic recovery potions and, when my stomach started to feel squishy, I received magic power replenishment from Valkyrie.
After completing the towers, which were my responsibility, I moved on to the construction of the outer moat.
At the castle in Kawanaka, there was a river nearby, so I created a water moat.
However, there is no river with that much water near Balca village.
So, I had no choice but to settle for a dry moat.
I prefer a water moat for its atmosphere, but there's nothing I can do about it.
I diligently dug a moat about 10 meters deep just outside the outer walls.
However, I decided to make the moat wider than the one at the castle in Kawanaka.
I also built bridges connecting to the gates on the east, west, south, and north sides of the outer walls.
I worked with the lumberjacks to build drawbridges wide enough for carriages to pass side by side and installed them.
This way, anyone trying to enter the town would have to cross this bridge, and in an emergency, we could raise the bridge to completely fortify the town.
If the enemy attacks, we can gather people who can use "Ice Spear" here to target them, and we should be able to achieve some results.
Thus, the town of Balca, surrounded by a wall with several 30-meter-high towers and a deep moat, was completed.
After discussions with everyone else, this new fortress city was named Balcania and became the center of the Balca Knight Territory.
