After Jian Ci had fully recovered, he returned to work immediately. He reported for work with a passion for labour, as he realised that being the second largest shareholder of Bai Sheng meant that his dividend was more than ten times his salary.
“Humans can’t be lazy,” he told Zhou Bai, “Once we become lazy, we’ll lose our direction and go astray. So I can’t just lay around like a useless person, I have to pull myself together, not for money, but for dignity.”
“I’ve booked a flight to Sabah, we’re leaving on the 20th,” Zhou Bai faced the iPad towards him.
Blue skies, blue seas, and clouds like cotton candy. Mango, coconut, and unlimited seafood.
“Okay, I just remembered that I have yet to clear my annual leaves.”
“What if your boss refuses?”
“Then I’ll quit,” Jian Ci answered, “In life, we shouldn’t remain stagnant, and we should explore the world outside. There’s a really good saying that goes, vacations are for better work ahead.”
Zhou Bai nodded in agreement.
Hence, the couple spent their wedding anniversary on a small island.
Zhou Bai had a plan. On the beach under the moonlight, with fine wine and delicacies, he would propose to Jian Ci.
Ever since they met, their proceedings were in a mess, and they were never carried according to traditional order of events. Engagement came first, then the marriage, before getting to know one another, and finally, dating came last. Since it had been muddled, it was too late to restart but the missing segments could still be filled.
Zhou Bai intentionally planned his proposal to be at the perfect time, at the perfect place, with the perfect person, and prepared everything he thought was the most alluring.
Donned in a neat suit, he held the keys to a new car in one hand, and a ring box in the other. Slowly, he walked towards his partner.
Just as he was about to go down on one knee, with lightning speed, the person opposite him stuffed a letter in his hands, and ran far away.
Jian Ci wore a fancy pair of shorts, his bare feet treading into the waves, and his hair was blown into a mess. While running, he turned back and shouted, “Mr Zhou! I owe you a confession!”
His smile was shy, but definitely happy.
And Zhou Bai could only open the letter, speechless.
To be exact, he opened the love letter.
