Noticing that a shadow was trying to catch up to him from behind, Shouma shouted.
“Enishi!”
Instantly, a large shadow landed in front of the Nure-onna. Even if only in size, it exceeded the Gyuuki.
“You’ve called me at last, chief!”
It was the Mikoshi Nyuudou.
It seemed that he knew what was going on, since he manifested himself into this size right at the beginning.
“Take care of the Nure-onna!”
“Aye, all right”
“Shouma!”
The boy turned at Tendou’s call. While struggling to deal with the Gyuuki, his employer just sent a kaii to him.
This kaii was a bluish-white, luminous, bird-like creature.
If he remembered correctly, it was the same kaii that Tendou had used when they collected Subaru in his very first fieldwork, the Aosagibi.
While he was focusing on the front and the giant kaii’s continuous assault, Tendou shouted to Shouma.
“Use it for lighting the way. And don’t touch the Nure-onna’s baby with bare hands. You won’t be able to let go!”
Tendou jumped out of the Gyuuki’s way. The creature’s claws dug into the spot where the man had just been standing. Tendou’s reflexes were so agile that it was hard to believe he doesn’t usually exercise.
“I understand!” was Shouma’s only reply as he entered the cave.
The darkness was so thick in the cave, that he couldn’t even see what was before his feet, if it weren’t for the Aosagibi. The bottom of the cave was a scraggy, rocky terrain so Shouma hurried, but at the same time, cautiously looked before himself as he walked forward.
After a while, he heard a faint, feeble-like cry, which was quite similar to a human baby.
“Over there!” shouted Subaru.
As Shouma approached the place, he found a nest, the same as what birds use to build, and in its strawy inner pillow, was a small baby lying. The little child was crying vigorously, its body was unusually pale. Even the umbilical cord was still attached.
Shouma took off the T-shirt he was wearing, then rolled it around the baby and picked it up. Thanks to his clothes he was able to avoid touching the child directly, but there was nothing he could do about its weight. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the baby was getting heavier by one kilogram every second.
At first, Shouma thought it would be a piece of cake, but his arms gradually became numb and he wasn’t sure if he would be able to hold it anymore.
Subaru jumped up, floated in front of him and spread his body wide enough for one person to ride.
“Shouma, I’ll carry the baby, just put it on me!”
“But…”
“It’s become heavier because a human tries to carry it. This kind of thing is probably irrelevant between us, kaii’s. This type of mechanism is designed to scare people in the first place.
Shouma placed the child, still wrapped in his T-shirt, on top of Subaru, who then lifted his bundle up, carelessly.
“See, I told you!”
While Subaru boastfully spoke, a loud sound, like rocks crushing, reverberated at the entrance of the cave. Then, the Gyuuki rushed towards them at an absurd speed.
“Eh? What!?”
Shouma, who was trembling from the sudden onrush, froze in his place, not knowing what to do, when an arm stretched out from the darkness and took hold of the Gyuuki’s horn. The creature was yanked away with such force that it helplessly collapsed against the walls.
Something jumped on top of it.
“Nozuchi, you were supposed to prevent it from getting there! Now, keep it still!”
Tendou’s voice echoed.
It was Enishi who snatched away the Gyuuki in one punch, and it seemed that the Nozuchi was the one on top of the ox-like demon.
The creature that tried to pursue Shouma, now made another jarring cry under the Nozuchi’s weight.
“Sorry, Shouma. I let it get in there.”
“Don’t worry, it’s alright.”
As Tendou walked next to Shouma, he glimpsed how dirty his employer’s cheek was. He must have worked pretty hard.
The Nure-onna stood befuddled next to the struggling, and howling Gyuuki. It wasn’t that she wanted to make any effort to help out the other in the first place, so now she didn’t know what she was supposed to do. Moreover, the child the Gyuuki took from her to keep her well in hand, was now with Shouma.
“Hey!”
At his call, the Nure-onna looked at Shouma. Her eyes flickered with anxiety.
“Quick! Here is your child!”
Shouma was trying to beckon her. After a few seconds, the Nure-onna seemed to finally understand what he was trying to say, so she wriggled her way, slithering, to the side of Shouma and the others.
A human-like hand sprouted from the green, snake-like body. She then took the child from the back of Subaru and hugged her baby. Before Shouma could know it, the kaii’s shape changed back to that of a familiar person.
“I’m sorry, I really am so sorry…”
The Nure-onna let out a sob as she crouched there.
“Even though you were born as a kaii, your personality is a bit too kind.” Tendou muttered to himself as he looked down at the small Nure-onna.
“Gaaaahhh!”
Perhaps because it realized its false comrade had lost her fighting spirit, the Gyuuki let out a high-pitched roar. Then, the creature was going berserk to get rid of the Nozuchi that was on top of it. The Nozuchi rushed to restrain the other kaii, but the Gyuuki was also desperate to break free.
The giant kaii scratched the ceiling of the cave, digging its claws in and cracking it. With its body, with the Nozuchi still clinging to it, it began to smash itself against the side of the cave.
The cave’s walls oscillated, small rocks chopped while making a strange noise, as the huge body constantly hit it.
“It’s bad! It’s trying to crush us to death with the whole cave!” shouted Tendou.
At that moment, a huge rock fell to the ground in front of Shouma’s eyes.
