Upon Ryugen’s signal, Sumeragi charged in with a first-strike, first-win strategy in mind.
“Haaaaaa!”
Ritsu avoided it by a large margin, without drawing his sword.
(There’s a chance he might attack using magic. I have to add enough margin)
In order to not lose initiative, Sumeragi continued slashing his sword.
“Damn it! Why won’t it hit!”
As Sumeragi cursed in a low voice, he stopped his offense, and distanced himself. He then passed magic through his sword which caused flames to start rising from its blade, the heat of which reached Ritsu clearly.
“I see, so that’s magic.”
Ritsu remained cautious, as he sized up the sword wrapped in flames.
Sumeragi showed a smug smile after noticing Ritsu’s surprised expression, before slowly closing in.
“It might have been different during Ousei-dono’s time, but now the collection of all abilities including skills, is the Yozakura style. Don’t complain even if you get hurt, alright Ousei-dono?”
“No worries.”
“Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!”
As Sumeragi swung his sword, a slash of fire assaulted Ritsu.
“Yop. I see.”
Ritsu continued parrying Sumeragi’s long-range fire slashes.
“I’m going all out now, Ousei-dono.”
Sumeragi launched another attack as before. Ritsu tried meeting the attacks with his sword, but the insubstantial flames come at him with the same momentum, even if torn apart.
“I see. So it’s that sort of an attack.”
Ritsu strengthened the Ki around him, and deflected the oncoming flames.
“Dodging my flames using only your body?”
“Then allow me to get serious as well.”
As he said that, several cherry-blossom petals jump out of Ritsu’s shadow, encompassing all vision.
(I should also go with a slashing technique)
Ritsu holds his sword, and the petals start swirling around him.
“[Sakura Ichi-monji].” (Cherry-Blossom First Character)
As Ritsu raised his sword high and brought it down, the cherry-blossom flew in accordance with that, and attacked Sumeragi full-force.
“[Engai]!” (Flaming Cover)
Sumeragi expanded flames around him in order to block the petals, but most of them simply broke through the barrier and found their target.
(Better be careful. If I hadn’t stopped that, it wouldn’t have ended with light injuries. I never expected it to end this quickly though…)
Ritsu weakened the momentum of the petals, before sticking them to Sumeragi.
“Isn’t this check?”
Ritsu looked towards Ryugen as he said that.
“You’re right.”
Ryugen replied, as he stared at the dumbfounded Sumeragi.
“I-, I haven’t lost yet. Have I not defended that perfectly!?”
Sumeragi said so, as he desperately hung on.
“No, that’s only because Yozakura Ousei preemptively stopped his attack.”
Igarashi looked at Sumeragi with his arms crossed.
“Pathetic. Finding your own weak spots through rigorous training, and using that as aid for your growth was expected of you.”
Igarashi told the defeated Sumeragi.
“That is… But, I truly defended…”
“Yozakura Ousei. Sumeragi Ouchou seems unconvinced. What will you do?”
Ryugen questioned Ritsu.
“Sumeragi Ouchou, you might end up getting hurt, but will you still continue?”
Ritsu questioned Sumeragi.
“I will continue.”
Sumeragi declared as he glared at Ritsu.
Ryugen judges the situation, before giving the signal to begin.
“Ready, begin!”
“Guwaaa-a!”
At the same time as the signal, the petals attached to Sumeragi lightly cut into him. Ritsu closed the distance between them in that gap, and stopped his blade near Sumeragi’s neck.
Ryugen signalled the end after sighing.
“This ends the test.”
“The results of this test shall be notified at a later date, after a discussion among the Ouseis, as well as the personnel department. I’m grateful to you all for gathering today. You are all dismissed.”
Ryugen turned his heels and began heading to the upper floors of the main building, followed by the Ouseis.
Having left the martial-arts hall, Ritsu and the others were now climbing stairs.
“Disaster struck right on the day of you inauguration, huh!”
Utayo said laughingly, as he thumped Ritsu’s back.
“No, I expected things to turn out this way, and I also feel bad for Sumeragi Ouchou who had to be sacrificed in all this.”
Ritsu responded with an awkward smile on his face.
“You’re right. Making a display of your strength as one belonging to an Ousei, is part of reality.”
Iori said while looking at Ritsu.
“However, Sumeragi Ouchou‘s poor attitude is also a part of the same reality. You have nothing to beat yourself over.”
“That’s true. Treat it as water off a duck’s back.”
Igarashi told Ritsu with a smile.
“That reminds me, what’s the personnel department?”
Ritsu asked Igarashi, while remembering what he heard earlier.
“Aah, just as the name implies, the personnel department distributes roles to all who are affiliated with the Yozakura school. Including the Oushuu, only the 5 of us deciding on all promotions or demotions might seem unfair, so we randomly select 20 people from the ranks of Hatsuzakura and above, and place them under the personnel department for a period of one year.”
“I get it now.”
Ritsu nodded satisfactorily.
“Also, you have the right to veto the promotion of any member above Sakurabito. When the veto is supported by more than half of the entire body, it is sent for reconsideration to the personnel department, and if it is opposed by 3/4ths of the body, the promotion gets scrapped.”
Iori began explaining the promotion system in further detail.
“It’s quite a complicated system, isn’t it?”
Ritsu replied while laughing awkwardly.
“Ritsu, I’d prefer if ya’ learnt common sense here from Igarashi. Best it to be someone from the previous world. Igarashi, I leave it to ya’.”
Ryugen said as he looked towards Igarashi and Ritsu.
“Very well. Please leave it to me.”
“I’m counting on you, Igarashi-san.”
Ritsu expressed his thanks to Igarashi, right as the part reached the 8th floor, where the personnel department was located.
